There are several ways that people wash cloth diapers.

* Wash the brand new diapers you buy twice in warm water with infant detergent, or a laundry detergent that is free of fragrances and dyes, before using them.

* If they are slightly used wash them with hot water and infant detergent, or a laundry detergent that is free of fragrances and dyes, once before using.

Dry or Wet Pail.

Some people choose to put their dirty diapers in a diaper pail that is full of water, to help eliminate stains. However the water can become extremely potent and unpleasant.

Some people choose to put their dirty diapers in a diaper pail that has no water. When sealed off it emits little or no odor and seems to be the more popular choice.

Washing Cycles*

There are several methods of washing diapers.

Option One: Wash diapers without detergent COLD/COLD cycles. Then wash them with detergent HOT/COLD cycles. Dry them as you would your towels or regular clothes.

Option Two: Soak diapers for minimum of a half of an hour in hot water and wash them in a HOT/COLD cycle with detergent. Then Rinse them with an additional HOT/COLD cycle without detergent. Dry them as you would your towels or regular clothes.

Option Three: Soak the diapers for minimum of a half of an hour in a HOT/COLD cycle with detergent, but when you washing machine drains the hot water reset the wash cycle again. This will give you an a hot soak, hot wash and cold rinse.

Option One for Laundry Mat: If you don't have the option to soak your diapers or add extra rinses, pre-rinse all of the poopy diapers before washing them. Wash them in a HOT/COLD cycle with detergent, if you can wash them a second time with either a HOT/COLD or COLD/COLD cycle. Dry them as you would your towels or regular clothes.

Option Two for Laundry Mat: Once again if you don't have the option to soak your diapers or add extra rinses, pre-rinse all of the poopy diapers before washing them. Soak the diapers in your diaper pail in hot water and some detergent, for about an hour and than drain your diaper pail and add the diapers to pre-filled washing machine set on a HOT/COLD cycle with detergent, if you would like to wash them a second time a COLD/COLD cycle would be fine. Dry them as you would your towels or regular clothes.

If you want to add distilled white vinegar, grapefruit seed extract or tree tea oil (not too much) to every few loads, that is all right but keep in mind, they will not only be hard on the odors they will be hard on the diapers as well.

If you have velcro covers it is a good idea to fasten them before washing them.

Never use bleach or fabric softener.

Cloth Diaper Drying Tips

It is recommended that when you have a cloth diaper or diaper cover that has elastic in it to wait until it has cooled down before stretching it out.

Hot dryer settings can be hard on some cloth diapers, so if you are not sure of the drying instructions of your brand it is best to dry them delicately.

If you line dry your cloth diaper in the sun, make sure that the brand that you use does not have a warning about doing this. For the cloth diapers that you can, some specify that you should, if you do it in the early morning or late afternoon, they will less likely dry as fast and therefore be less stiff.

If you use plastic bags, you can wait
longer. Clean with tree tea oil & water or a
diluted bleach and water mixture. It helps
if you can let it dry in the sun. If you can't
set it outside make sure the room is warm.
